Empowering animal advocacy organisations in African countries

Donate

Building a better tomorrow for animals, by preparing for it today

  • The problem

    • There are approximately 3.2 billion land-based farmed animals in Africa and a shift towards intensive animal farming practices is expected to occur

    • Many animal welfare organisations and advocates lack funding - only $1M went towards farmed animal advocacy work in Africa in 2020

    • Funders are interested in funding more African animal advocacy work, but have uncertainties about the work and capacity of animal advocacy organisations in Africa

  • Our proposed solution

    • Increase capacity and effectiveness of African animal advocacy organisations

    • Attract more funding to the African animal advocacy space

What we do

We work to strengthen the funding capacities and effectiveness of African animal advocacy organisations that are reducing animal suffering, particularly that of farmed animals.

The purpose of our programme is to:

  • Help organisations to be more structured, strategic, or professionalised.

  • Help organisations fundraise sustainably and build the critical components of effective, evidence-based charities

  • Empower organisations to utilise concepts learnt from the programme throughout the existence of their charity

  • Prepare organisations to a stage where they are ready for more funding, so funders are confident in the impact of their work

  • Help organisations overcome challenges, prepare for growth, and do more effective work that will help animals in relatively neglected geographic regions

How we do it

Our outreach and support to existing grassroots groups consists of providing:

  • Recommendations on relevant funding opportunities and resources/support after researching the fit and alignment of an opportunity and their organisational needs/scope

  • Feedback on organisations’ grant applications

  • Connections to the international animal advocacy community (e.g. funders, mentors, volunteers)

  • Needs assessment to identify gaps in aspects that form fundamental blocks of an effective nonprofit organisation (e.g. theory of change, measurement and evaluation, financial planning, communications, annual strategic plans)

  • Templates and advice on best practices in running an effective nonprofit organisation

Our progress

What we have achieved to date

  • Increased an average charity's awareness about relevant funding opportunities by 40-50%

  • Provided feedback on 6 grant applications to improve charities’ grant writing abilities, helping them apply for $188,870 of grant funding in total

  • Connected 4 volunteers to help 5 charities create or improve their web and social media presence

  • Influenced organisations in their strategic, organisational, and fundraising plans

Why this is important

  • Organisations have a larger pool of funding opportunities to apply to in the future

  • Organisations can apply their grantwriting skill in future applications and increase their chances of securing funding over time

  • Organisations can promote their work, increase their online presence and credibility as a charity, and attract more talent and funding over time

  • Organisations can prepare for growth, make better decisions, and focus on important work
